JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – UNC Greensboro volleyball team (11-15, 5-9 Southern Conference) fell to the SoCon leader ETSU (22-5, 11-1 SoCon) 3-0 (14-25, 17-25, 22-25) Wednesday in Brooks Gymnasium to finish a three-match road trip.
Junior outside hitter Emily Keilen led the team with eight kills, while senior setter Allison Penner led the team with 25 assists and added six digs and freshman defensive specialist Mandy Garvens led the team with 13 digs.
UNCG scored four of the first five points in the first frame to take a three-point lead, 4-1, but the Bucs scored six of the next seven points to take a two-point lead, 7-5. The Spartans scored three of the next four points to tie the set at eight, but ETSU scored 17 of the next 23 points to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Bucs scored seven of the first 11 points in the second set to take a three-point lead, 7-4, but UNCG scored the next two points to cut the lead to a point, 7-6. ETSU outscored the Spartans 18-11 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
With both teams scoring five points to begin the final stanza, ETSU scored five of the next six points to take a four-point lead, 10-6, but the Spartans scored seven of the next nine points to take a point lead, 13-12. The Bucs scored six of the next nine points to take a two-point lead, 18-16, forcing a Spartan timeout. After the timeout, UNCG scored the next two points to tie the set at 18, but ETSU scored seven of the final 11 points to win the set and the match.
The Spartans are off this weekend and return to action next weekend hosting the final two regular season matches with Wofford Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. and Furman Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. for Senior Day in Fleming Gymnasium.
