UNCG women rise in latest USTFCCCA rankings
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The UNCG women's cross country rose seven spots in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional rankings, while the men's team stayed put, the organization announced on Monday.
After breaking into the regional rankings for the first time in school history two weeks ago, the Spartan women jumped from No. 15 in the Southeast Region to No. 8.
"The women obviously made a huge jump in the rankings this week," said coach Linh Nguyen. "Most of that can be attributed to our performance Friday at UVA. We lost only to Virginia, who is ranked 16th nationally, and beat multiple teams ranked higher than us in our region and the South region. This ranking is a nice recognition of that result. To be one of the top 10 teams in such a strong region speaks a lot to the level of hard work and dedication of our women."
The men's program, meanwhile, maintained its school-best No. 11 spot in the regional rankings this week.
"This year is a strange year with the men's rankings because so many teams are running very inconsistently," said Nguyen. "We've had a couple of solid meets in a row, though not quite where we'd like to be. I think that breaking into the top 10 would be great and we're going to work hard over the next few weeks to try to accomplish that goal."
The Spartans will return to competition on Oct. 29 as they compete at the Southern Conference Championship in Charleston, S.C.
