GREENSBORO, N.C. – After wrapping up perhaps the best regular season in school history, the UNCG cross country team will look replicate that success this weekend as the Spartans travel to Boone, N.C. for the 2010 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
The championship is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the women's 5K race. The men's 8K race is set for 10:45 a.m., followed by an awards ceremony to conclude the championship.
Running on the men's team will be Tyron Alston, Brian Carrington, Andy Clyne, Jermaine Coore, Taylor Day, Kenny Hinman, Mike Koech, AJ Savoia and Joey Thompson. Ginny Cronley, Tiffany Garber, Anna Grimes, Kerry Hartman, Kelly Montague, Ashley Schnell and Shaina Sumney will comprise the women's team.
The men's team will look to dethrone Appalachian State on the Mountaineers' home course after they have won the past five SoCon championships. The men have four of the top 14 times this season in the conference.
Thompson is tops on that list at third for UNCG with his school record time of 24:20.50 that he set at the Royal Cross Country Challenge two weeks ago. Koech is also in the top-5 in the SoCon this season as his time of 24:29.47 ranks fifth in the league. AJ Savoia (10th) and Andy Clyne (14th) are also high in the conference with times of 24:56.90 and 25:17.60, respectively.
The women's team has been led by junior Ashley Schnell this season who currently holds the school record in the 5k. Her time of 17:37.07 in the event that she set at the Greater Louisville Classic is the second-best time in the SoCon this year.
Sophomore Shaina Sumney ranks seventh in the conference this season with her time of 17:58.64 and Kerry Hartman is just behind her in eighth with a time of 18:05.10.
