ROCK HILL, SC – Competing in the Gold Division, UNC Greensboro’s men’s cross country team finished fifth and the women’s team took ninth at the Asics Winthrop Invitational on Saturday.
The men’s team totaled 137 points. The women’s team compiled 236 points.
In the women’s 5K race, junior Sherrika Jordan paced the Spartans for the second straight meet. Jordan ran a career-best time of 19:04 and finished 24th. Sophomore Tiffany Garber also ran a personal best, covering the course in a time of 19:22 and placing 38th. Freshman Kerry Hartman placed 60th with a time of 19:45, while classmate Jenna Paley was just two seconds behind in 62nd. Junior Mary Rutz was 76th with a career-best 5K time of 19:57, while freshman Emily Vasquez ran 20:17 and finished 85th. Freshman Chelsea Willette and sophomore Michelle Chewens finished 92nd and 93rd, respectively. Willette ran 20:31, while Chewens clocked 20:33. Rounding out the Spartans were freshman Caitlin Lenz (115th, 21:30) and junior Becca Colangelo (144th, 23:29).
Louisville’s Tarah McKay won the women’s 5K race en route to helping the Cardinals to the women’s team title. McKay had a race-winning time of 17:05 as the Cardinals total 29 points in the team standings.
Freshmen Joey Thompson and Jermaine Coore led the Spartan men in the 8K race. Thompson and Coore both covered the course in a time of 25:52, placing 23rd and 24th, respectively. Senior Josh Wyatt placed 32nd with a time of 26:16, while sophomore AJ Savoia ran 26:40 and finished 41st. Sophomore Andrew Clyne was 46th and ran 26:50, while redshirt senior Xavier Rutz was just three seconds behind and placed 50th. Junior Terry Wyatt raced 27:21 and finished 65th as junior Cory Bowen ran 27:24 and placed 68th. Junior Lincoln Bennett posted a career-best time of 27:53 en route to finishing 75th. Sophomore Bobby Belcher crossed the finish line in a time of 28:12 and placed 81st, while freshman Brian Carrington was 84th with a time of 28:21. Rounding out the Spartans were junior Ryan Solomon (92nd, 29:03) and freshman Patrick O'Connor (102nd, 30:00).
Louisville also won the men’s title and had the top finisher. The Cardinals totaled 23 points, while Scott McClain had a race-winning time of 24:51.
UNCG races next on Saturday, Oct. 4, when the Spartans take part in two meets. The Spartans will run at the George Mason Invitational and the Hagan Stone Classic. The George Mason Invitational will take place at Bull Run Regional Park in Manassas, VA, with the women’s 6K race beginning at 10 a.m. and the men’s 8K race at 10:45. Meanwhile, the Hagan Stone Classic will take place at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro. The men’s 8K race is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., while the women’s race is at 10:15.
