Jordan runs third-fastest 6K time in history, UNCG races at two meets

CENTREVILLE, VA and GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro’s men’s and women’s cross country teams raced at two meets on Saturday.  The Spartans ran at the Mason Invitational at Bull Run Park in Centreville, VA and at the Hagan Stone Classic in Greensboro.  At the Mason Invitational, the women, who were racing in their first 6K of the season, were sixth with 224 points, while the men took fifth with 178 points.  Meanwhile, at the Hagan Stone Classic, UNCG's men's team finished sixth in the team standings.

On the women’s side, junior Sherrika Jordan paced the Spartans for the third-straight meet.  Jordan covered the 6K course in a time of 22:18, which is the third-fastest time in program history.  Jordan’s time ranks behind school record-holder Eleanor Wilson (21:59 in 2003) and Brigid O’Connell (22:16 in 2000).  Meanwhile, sophomore Tiffany Garber was 48th with a time of 23:59.  Freshman Kerry Hartman ran 24:19 and took 56th, while classmate Jade Farlow crossed the finish line in a time of 24:32 and was 62nd.  Freshman Emily Vasquez clocked 24:40 and was 68th.  Freshman Jenna Paley covered the course in a time of 25:00 and placed 74th.  Mary Rutz was 84th with a time of 25:11.  Rounding out UNCG were freshman Chelsea Willette (25:52, 100th) and sophomore Michelle Chewens (26:05, 107th).

Virginia’s Lauretta Dexubay won the race with a time of 21:29, helping the Cavaliers to a first-place team finish.  The Cavaliers totaled 30 points.

Freshman Jermaine Coore led UNCG in the men’s 8K race, crossing the finish line in a time of 25:49 and placing 24th.  Redshirt senior Xavier Rutz ran 26:12 and placed 35th, while redshirt senior Josh Wyatt was just seven seconds behind in 39th spot.  Sophomore AJ Savoia took 55th with a time of 26:47 and junior Terry Wyatt clocked 27:05 and was 64th.  Freshman Joey Thompson crossed the finish line in a time of 27:18 and was 72nd, while sophomore Andrew Clyne ran 27:25 and placed 77th.  Rounding out the Spartans were junior Cory Bowen (27:59, 101st) and junior Lincoln Bennett (28:28).

Virginia’s Emil Heineking took the men’s individual crown as he had a race-winning time of 24:40.  Virginia also won the men’s team title, compiling 19 points.

On the women's side at the Hagan Stone Classic, freshman Caitlin Lenz was 40th overall, covering the 5K course in a time of 21:03.9.  Redshirt sophomore LaTrese Bristol ran 22:32.9 and finished 65th, while freshman Danielle Merriman was 106th with a time of 24:42.9.

Emily Fournier from Elon won the women's individual title with a time of 18:29.5.  Elon also claimed the team crown with 23 points.

On the men's side at the Hagan Stone Classic, sophomore Bobby Belcher led the Spartan men.  Belcher covered the 8K course in a time of 28:14.0, finishing 44th.  Classmate Justin Ruppe was 48th with a time of 28:23.5, while freshman Brian Carrington ran 28:31.9 and placed 55th.  Sophomore Taylor Hurst clocked 28:44.6 and finished 62nd.  Junior Ryan Solomon (29:31.8) and freshman Patrick O'Connor (30:16.5) rounded out the Spartans, finishing 77th and 98th, respectively.

Johnny Shuping won the men's race with a time of 25:55.8.  Elon won the team championship wiht 24 points.

UNCG's next meet is the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, NC on Friday, Oct. 17.
