UNCG men tied for fourth, women picked ninth in SoCon Preseason Poll

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro’s men’s cross country team tied with Davidson for fourth, while the women’s team was picked to finish ninth in the Southern Conference Cross Country Preseason Polls, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday, Aug. 26.  On the men’s side, the Spartans and Davidson both received 70 points.  Meanwhile, UNCG’s women’s team totaled 37 points.
 
In the men’s poll, defending champion Appalachian State was picked to finish first, totaling 100 points and receiving 10 first-place votes.  Furman was second with 86 points and one first-place vote and Chattanooga was selected third with 80 points.  Samford (48 points), Elon (46 points) and Western Carolina (44 points) were tabbed sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.  The Citadel received 27 points and ranked ninth in the poll.  College of Charleston was 10th with 24 points, while Wofford rounded out the men’s poll in 11th place and 10 points.

Defending women’s champion Chattanooga was selected to win the SoCon title, garnering 10 first-place votes and 120 points.  Furman was tabbed second with 102 points and one first-place vote.  Appalachian State was third with 95 points and one first-place vote, while Davidson was just two points behind in fourth.  Elon was picked fifth with 81 points and Samford was sixth with 79 points.  Western Carolina was selected seventh and tallied 59 points and College of Charleston totaled 57 points and ranked eighth.  The Citadel was picked 10th with 34 points, while Georgia Southern was 11th with 19 points.  Wofford was tabbed 12th and totaled 16 points.

The Spartans begin the 2008 cross country campaign on Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Eye Opener hosted by USC Upstate in Spartanburg, SC.
