GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jessica Brezwyn (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) and Sara Hohman (Zionsville, Ind./Cathedral) have signed national letters of intent to play volleyball and attend UNCG beginning in the fall of 2013, according to an announcement Thursday by head coach Patrick Nicholas.
"We are very excited to welcome Jessica and Sara to the Spartan family," Nicholas said. "Not only are these two ladies great volleyball players, but also great students. We lose our four-year starting setter in Ari Lysacek, but I am thrilled to add two players of this caliber. Next year looks really bright for UNCG volleyball."
Hohman recently finished her prep career at Cathedral High School as the program's all-time leader in assists as she produced well over 3,000 in four seasons, breaking two-time high school All-American Emily Burke's record. She led the Fighting Irish to city championships from 2009-11, sectional titles in 2010 and 2012, and a regional crown this past campaign. Cathedral advanced to the Indiana state final four a few weeks ago and finished the year with a 21-10 record.
"Sara runs our offense well," Cathedral head coach Jean Kesterson stated. "We have a lot of options, and Sara works hard to deliver the ball to the person that is hot. I think she is going to be an outstanding college setter."
Named to the 2012 Under Armour All-America Watch List, Hohman earned Indiana Coaches of Girls' Sports Association All-Star accolades her junior and senior seasons. She also earned a spot on the Cathedral honor roll all four of her years at the school.
Hohman has played her club volleyball for Team Indiana and Munciana – the same club for which assistant coach Abbi Blackburn competed.
"Sara has been a four-year starter for a fantastic Cathedral high school program," Nicholas said. "She stepped in as a freshman when the starting setter went down with an injury and she never looked back. Sara's strength is in the consistency of her sets. With Emily McMurtrey gaining valuable experience this year, we are pretty excited about having two setters that will enable us to do some special things on offense."
Brezwyn, an outside hitter, was a four-year varsity starter for Hinsdale South High School and recently earned Under Armour High School All-America status (honorable mention). Serving as a team captain her junior and senior seasons, she garnered all-conference accolades all four years of her prep career and was named the 2012 Hinsdale South MVP. Brezwyn was also tabbed as a 2012 Prepvolleyball Senior Ace, making her one of the top 250 senior class players in the nation. Over the past two seasons, she has ranked first for the Hornets in kills and second in digs.
"Jessica has truly blossomed into an amazing all around volleyball player," Hinsdale South head coach Lisa Martinez commented. "She went from being a shy long and gangly freshman who was a starter on varsity, to a player that can not only control a match but take over a match. I am so honored I was able to spend four years coaching Jessica and the best part about her is she has yet to hit her glass ceiling. Although she is one of the strongest players in the area she still craves information to continue to improve her all-around game. Her dedication to this sport has truly paid off."
Brezwyn garnered a number of honors this past season, including Chicago Sun-Times All-Area First-Team, SportstownChicago.com High School All-Star Team and Daily Herald Du Page County All-Area Team laurels on the way to leading Hinsdale South to the regional championship. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the St. Charles Mizuno Cup and Plainsfield North High School Invitational as well as one of the area's top 50 players by the Chicago Sun-Times.
"Jessica will give us a highly-skilled ball-control hitter which is something we lacked this year, especially when Lauren Betlach was injured," Nicholas said. "Add her in with our returning liberos, and our ball control potential has skyrocketed. Jessica also hits really well out of the back row and has a great variety of shots in her arsenal."
The 2011 campaign saw Brezwyn grab a number of accolades. She was tabbed Special Mention All-State by the Chicago Tribune and All-Area Second Team by the Chicago Sun-Times while the latter publication also selected her as one of the top 200 players to watch. Other honors for Brezwyn included Daily Herald Du Page County All-Area Team, News-Gazette All-State Honorable Mention, Darien Patch Athlete-of-the-Week and Wheaton Classic All-Tournament Team.
At the conclusion of her sophomore season, in which she led Hinsdale South to a sectional title, Brezwyn was named to the Suburban Life All-Area Team (honorable mention) and the Plainfield North High School Invitational All-Tournament Team. She was also the MVP of the Illinois High School Association playoffs for her efforts against Benet Academy.
Brezwyn's success is not limited to her prep career as she competes for the Sports Performance 17 Mizuno Club. In 10 years playing club volleyball, she earned a plethora of recognition, most recently earning AAU 16 Open All-America honors while leading her team to a third-place finish at the 2011 national tournament. Prepvolleyball tabbed her as a Soph 79 Elite Honorable Mention honoree in 2010 as she played in the United States Volleyball High Performance program – earning a spot on the Continental Team in 2009 and 2010 and being named the USA HP All-Tournament Team Best Server in 2010. As a freshman in 2009, she was selected Prepvolleyball Frosh 59 Highest Honorable Mention and led her club to ASICS Juniors national titles for the 2007 and 2009 events as well as the 2010 15's Pre-Nationals championship a year later.
In the classroom, Brezwyn was an Honor Roll student and Dean's List member all four years and earned West Suburban Gold All-Academic honors.
