Volleyball Begins Second Half Of SoCon Play
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG kicks off a four-match homestand this weekend, welcoming Southern Conference South Division opponents Furman and Wofford to Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans host Furman Friday at 7 p.m. before entertaining the Terriers Saturday evening - also at 7 p.m.
UNCG looks to solidify its hold on second place in the North Division as their 4-4 league record keeps the Spartans in front of Chattanooga, Elon and Western Carolina by a game. The top four teams in each division qualify for the Southern Conference Championship.
Junior libero Kellie Orewiler led the way defensively in the two matches, racking up a total of 50 digs for an average of 6.25 per set. She tied her career high at Davidson, posting 36 digs in the five sets. The weekend also brought about the return of lone senior, setter Ari Lysacek, who saw her first action since injuring her ankle Sept. 4 at High Point. She played in seven of the eight sets, producing 52 assists, 14 digs, six kills, three blocks and three service aces.
Senior outside hitter Karrian Chambers continues to make her case for a spot on the all-conference team as she posted a team-best 31 kills (3.88 k/s), 25 digs (3.12 d/s) and four total blocks during the weekend.
FACTS ABOUT FURMAN...
Furman will provide a stiff test for UNCG this weekend as the Paladins sit in third place in the South Division with a 6-2 record - just one game behind leaders College of Charleston and Georgia Southern. Furman made quick work of the Spartans last season in Greenville, S.C., taking the only meeting between the schools 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-17). Preseason All-SoCon members Natalie Braun and Caroline Adams have lived up to their billing, averaging 3.88 and 2.49 kills per set, while freshman setter Jo Wilks owns a 12.17 assists per set mark.
Wofford enters the weekend on a high note, having defeated Western Carolina (3-1) and Appalachian State (3-0) at home in its most recent outings. UNCG fared well against the Terriers last season, winning 3-1 at Benjamin Johnson Arena. Junior Amanda Liguori leads the offensive charge for Wofford with 217 kills (2.86 k/s) while senior Reagan Styles resides in the top 10 in the league in digs with 4.17 per set.
