SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG sophomore Kellie Orewiler was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performances against Appalachian State and Western Carolina, the league office announced on Monday.
"I'm really, really happy and proud for Kellie," said coach Patrick Nicholas. "To average over seven digs a set this past weekend was incredible. She is the hardest worker on the team and I'm really happy for the season she is having so far. She brings a lot of intensity not only in matches, but in practices every day, and she has given a lot to the team. Also, her birthday was on Sunday so it's a nice present for her."
Orewiler averaged 7.12 digs per set in the Spartans' two matches last week. On Friday, she recorded a match-high 21 digs, which marked the seventh time this season she eclipsed the 20-dig mark.
The libero turned around and recorded a career-high 36 digs on Sunday in the 3-1 against Western Carolina. The 36 digs marked the third time this season she had 30 or more digs in a match, as she became just the seventh player nationally to accomplish the feat. The record is also tied for the fourth-most digs in a four-set Division I match this season.
Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week was Courtney Rhein (Appalachian State), Ise d'Angelo (The Citadel), Emily Shelton (College of Charleston), Molly Crenshaw (Davidson), Moriah Bellissimo (Georgia Southern), Carolyn Nicoletti (Furman) and Carrie Minogue (Western Carolina).
The Spartans will return home for the first time since Oct. 15 on Friday as they face Chattanooga at 6 p.m.
