Newman named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG senior Ariel Newman has been named the Southern Conference's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the week of September 26, the league office announced on Monday.
Newman helped the Spartans to a 3-0 record last week with wins over North Carolina A&T, Elon and The Citadel. UNCG traveled to North Carolina A&T last Wednesday for a midweek game where Newman had a .364 hitting percentage in the Spartans' 3-0 sweep of the Aggies.
On Friday, the outside hitter recorded a match-high 21 kills against Elon and finished with a double-double in that match with 15 digs. She also recorded only one error in that match and finish with a .465 hitting percentage. In the match against The Citadel, the Greensboro, N.C. native led the Spartans offensively with a match-high 11 kills.
Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week were Anna Wagner (Appalachian State), Kaona Mercer (The Citadel), Sloane White (College of Charleston), Tindall Sewell (Davidson), Christina Dorismond (Furman), Meredith Paskert (Georgia Southern), Elizabeth Neisler (Samford), Carrie Minogue (Western Carolina), and Arden Anderson (Wofford).
The Spartans return to competition on Saturday as they host Western Carolina at 5 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
