ORLANDO, Fla. – Despite a team-high 12 kills from Ariel Newman, UNCG fell to Pittsburgh, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-18), on Saturday at the UCF Invitational.
The Spartans fell to 4-6 on the year, while the Panthers improved their record to 8-2.
Monica Wignot had a match-high 15 kills for Pittsburgh and Kiesha Leggs chipped in 13 kills, as well. Lindsey Zitzke had 36 assists in the winning effort and Margy Acton added a match-high 19 digs.
The Panthers came out and took control early in the first set by jumping out to an 8-3 lead, but the Spartans were able to rally and eventually tie the score at 12. After being tied at 14 a few points later, Pittsburgh went on a 7-2 run to open up a 21-16 lead as they went on to claim the opening set, 25-21.
The second set was similar to the first as Pittsburgh came out and took an early 12-5 lead. Once again, though, UNCG responded with a run of its own and tied the set at 17. The Panthers immediately responded with a 5-0 run of its own before winning the set, 25-20.
In the final set, the Panthers broke open a 10-all deadlock with a 9-2 run to take a 19-12 lead over the Spartans. UNCG was only able to cut the deficit down to four later in the set as Pittsburgh won the set, 25-18.
The Spartans will wrap up their stay at the UCF Invitational on Sunday as they play South Florida at 11 a.m.
