Balanced attack propels UNCG to 3-2 comeback win
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UNCG had five players record double-digit kills and the Spartans came back from a 2-0 deficit at the break to defeat Chattanooga on the road, 3-2 (18-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-8), on Sunday afternoon in Maclellan Gym. The win put UNCG back into a tie for first place in the North Division with Elon after the Phoenix fell to Samford this afternoon.
The Spartans improved their overall record to 19-8 and 7-5 in the Southern Conference. The Mocs fell to 10-19 this season and 5-8 in the league.
"I was really proud of the team tonight," said coach Patrick Nicholas. "Chattanooga played great tonight, but I thought the team did a great job of rebounding after our loss to Samford. We played with a lot of energy and effort and decided we weren't going to quit and that was the huge plus we needed. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into our next match."
Caley Redden had a match-high 13 kills to lead the Spartans, while Alissa Beaudway, Kayren Finney, Ariel Newman and Olivia Humphries added 11 kills each. Redden, Newman and Beaudway all had double-doubles as they had 19, 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Ari Lysacek also had her team-leading 13th double-double this season as she posted a match-high 48 assists and 12 digs. Kellie Orewiler had a team-high 21 digs, as well.
Heather Parman and Christina Teter led the Mocs offensively with 12 kills each. Parman also had a matching 12 digs for a double-double. Tess Kosycarz had 40 assists and 10 digs for Chattanooga too.
After the Spartans forced a fifth and final set, UNCG carried its momentum into the set as it took an early 5-2 lead. The Spartans continued to push their lead as they went ahead 9-4 on a kill by Humphries that forced a Chattanooga timeout. UNCG would go on to complete its comeback by winning the fifth set, 15-8.
In the opening set, the Spartans opened the match with a 5-3 lead after a kill by Beaudway. That would be the final lead for UNCG as Chattanooga went on a 12-2 to take a commanding 15-7 lead. The Mocs led 20-11 before the Spartans rallied to cut the lead down to 20-16. After a Chattanooga timeout, the Mocs would go on to win the set, 25-18.
The Spartans once again fell behind early as the Mocs built a 12-6 lead after an attack error by UNCG. UNCG continued to fight and chip away at the Mocs lead before tying the set at 16. The Spartans trailed just 20-19 late, but the Mocs won four-straight points en route to winning the set, 25-20, to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
It appeared it was much of the same in the third set as UNCG fell behind 8-4 before the Spartans called a timeout. Out of the timeout, UNCG won the next five points to take a 9-8 lead on a kill by Newman. The Spartans led 20-17 late before the Mocs came back to cut the lead to 22-21, but UNCG regrouped to win the final three points to win the set, 25-21.
The fourth set was the closest set as the teams saw the scored tied nine times. The teams traded points in the early going as they were tied at 13 before UNCG rattled off four-straight points to take a 17-13 lead. The Spartans had set point at 24-20 on a kill by Redden before the Mocs cut the lead to 24-23. UNCG finally closed out the set on a block by Beaudway and Kayren Finney.
The Spartans return home on Friday as they host backyard-rival Elon in a battle of North Division leaders at 6 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
