UNCG to hold annual Dig Pink matches this weekend

GREENSBORO, N.C. – In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UNCG has partnered with the Side-Out Foundation and The Women's Hospital of Greensboro to host its Dig Pink weekend on Oct. 22-23, when the Spartans host South Division leader College of Charleston and The Citadel. The highlight of the weekend will be having two-time Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor in attendance for the match against The Citadel.

This season, instead of having just one Dig Pink match, the Spartans have decided to have an entire Dig Pink weekend. UNCG will kick off the weekend festivities on Friday by hosting the Cougars from College of Charleston at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium, before hosting The Citadel at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The motto for this year's event is "Fight Like a Spartan," which is also the motto for UNCG's Pink Zone games, which are held in conjunction with the women's basketball team every season.

The Spartans will be one of 997 total teams from across the country, including 231 collegiate teams and seven other Southern Conference schools, participating in Dig Pink and the battle against breast cancer.

Dig Pink is the trademark name for Side-Out Foundation's fundraising events. Side-Out awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families.

On Friday against College of Charleston, the first 200 fans will receive free pink pom poms. There will also be a postgame autograph session with the members of the volleyball team.

It will only get better on Saturday as the Spartans cap off the night with a match against The Citadel. After holding a sand volleyball clinic on the UNCG campus through the Greensboro Sportsplex, May-Treanor will attend the match against the Bulldogs and will be recognized prior to competition.

The first 200 fans in the doors on Saturday will receive free pink T-shirts. There will also be a silent auction prior to the match, featuring items autographed by May-Treanor. There will be a postgame autograph session for all fans, as well, with the members of the team.

All proceeds raised during the two matches will go toward the Mammography Scholarship Fund at The Women's Hospital of Greensboro, which provides screening mammograms for women who are unable to afford them. The Women's Hospital of Greensboro is a division of Moses Cone Health System and is North Carolina's first free-standing hospital dedicated to women.

This season, for the first-time ever, the Spartans will be wearing commemorative pink jerseys for both matches.

Admission is free for everyone and fans are also encouraged to wear pink during the weekend.

Those wishing to donate online can do so by clicking here. Proceeds from the online donations will go toward the Side-Out Foundation.
