GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro volleyball coach Patrick Nicholas announced his schedule for the upcoming 2010 season on Thursday, which is highlighted by four early season tournaments, including the Spartan Spiketacular, and 13 home matches.
UNCG will kick off its season at the Norfolk State Tournament on Aug. 27 as the Spartans take on Navy and Kent State. The Spartans will then face Norfolk State and Providence on the final day of the tournament.
After a midweek trip to North Carolina Central on Sept. 1, the Spartans will head down to Wilmington, N.C. to compete in the UNC Wilmington Tournament on Sept. 3-4. The Spartans will start the tournament against South Carolina State on Friday and then wrap up the tournament on Saturday against UCF and UNC Wilmington.
UNCG will then hit the road for another tournament as the Spartans travel to Johnson City, Tenn. for the East Tennessee State Tournament. The Spartans will face UNC Asheville on the first day before playing host East Tennessee State and Austin Peay on the final day.
The Spartans will then host North Carolina A&T for their second midweek game before hosting the Spartan Spiketacular. UNCG will face off against Morgan State on Sept. 17 and then play Norfolk State and Gardner-Webb on Sept. 18.
"The Spartan Spiketacular is a great way to end our tournament schedule before we begin Southern Conference play," said Nicholas. "The whole season leading up to league action is a mixture of some good teams from larger conferences to small conferences. There is a lot of good variety and different styles of plays to help us get ready for the SoCon season."
The team will open SoCon play at home for the first time since 2005
as UNCG hosts defending North Division champion Samford on Sept. 24
before wrapping up the weekend against Chattanooga. The Spartans
will then begin a three-game road swing as they travel to Western
Carolina and Appalachian State before heading down the road to face
Elon.
UNCG will return home on Oct. 9 to play Wofford before hitting the road again as the Spartans will travel to Georgia Southern and Davidson.
The Spartans will return to Fleming Gymnasium on Oct. 22-23 as UNCG hosts College of Charleston and The Citadel for a special weekend. The weekend will mark the Dig Pink ceremonies, which is an effort to raise awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer.
"We are expanding the Dig Pink match into an entire weekend this season," said Nicholas. "This is an important event and cause for use and it promises to be an exciting weekend.
UNCG will then return to the road to face Samford and Chattanooga to wrap up the month of October. The Spartans close out the regular season with four of their final five matches at home. They host Elon on Nov. 5 before traveling to Furman the next day.
The Spartans will wrap up the final week of the regular season by hosting High Point in a midweek match before playing Western Carolina and Appalachian State on the weekend.
The Southern Conference Championships this season will be in Charleston, S.C. on Nov. 19-20.
