GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro head volleyball coach Patrick Nicholas announced Thursday that Laura Tomes has been hired as an assistant volleyball coach for the upcoming season.
Tomes comes to the Spartans after spending the past season as a student assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma, where she played for four seasons, while she completed her degree. She also spent the past two and a half seasons as a Junior National Volleyball coach for the Oklahoma Elite Volleyball Club.
Upon completion of her academic eligibility in 2006, Tomes spent the 2007 season representing the United States on the National Volleyball Team that competed at the Pan-American Cup as well as the Pan-American Games. She also played overseas in 2007, helping her team, Rote Raben, win the German Cup.
"I am really excited to add a person of Laura's quality to my staff," said Nicholas. "Laura not only brings a wealth of experience collegiately, but her experience on the U.S. National Team as well as playing overseas will be invaluable to our program."
As a player at the University of Oklahoma, Tomes was named to the 2006 All-Big 12 Team her senior season as she helped lead her team to the Sweet 16. Tomes earned numerous academic awards as a Sooner in addition to her athletic achievements. She was a first-team academic All-Big 12 performer as a sophomore and junior and a second-team academic All-Big 12 honoree following her senior season. She was also named second-team academic all-region as a senior.
Tomes graduated from Oklahoma in May with a bachelor's degree in multidisciplinary studies of numerical processing and general science.
