GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro head volleyball coach Shawn Garus announced his schedule for the upcoming 2009 season on Friday, which is highlighted by a trio of early season tournaments, including the UNCG Tournament, and 13 home matches.
The Spartans will kick off the season at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., against two-time defending Big South champion and returning NCAA tournament participant Liberty. UNCG will also face ACC foe Virginia Tech and Montana in the tournament.
UNCG will make the short trip to face Winston-Salem State before heading to Columbia, S.C., to play in the South Carolina Tournament. The Spartans will compete against SEC opponent South Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Eastern Kentucky at the tournament.
After returning home to host Marshall and Central Florida, the Spartans will travel to High Point. UNCG will then host their own tournament on Sept. 18 and 19, which will include ACC opponent NC State, Big East opponent Georgetown and LaSalle.
The Spartans will then begin Southern Conference play by embarking on a three-match road swing that will take them to Samford, Chattanooga and North Carolina A&T. UNCG will then enjoy a three-match homestand against Appalachian State, Western Carolina and Elon.
UNCG will make a trip to Spartanburg, S.C., to face Wofford before returning home to host Davidson and Georgia Southern for a pair of weekend matches. The following weekend, the Spartans will travel to The Citadel and College of Charleston.
The Spartans return home as they host North Carolina Central for a midweek match followed by a pair of SoCon home matches against Chattanooga and Samford. After making a trip to Elon, UNCG returns home for the final home match of the season against returning SoCon champion Furman.
UNCG will wrap up the regular season against Appalachian State and Western Carolina on the road. The 2009 SoCon Championship will be from Nov. 20-22 at the site of the high seed with only the top two seeds in each division making the championship.
