GREENSBORO, NC – After earning their second consecutive berth in the Southern Conference volleyball tournament title game, junior middle blocker Kaitlyn Nortz and outside hitter Branagan Fuller were named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Volleyball Team.
Eight student-athletes representing six institutions were named to the second annual all-state team. Charlotte and UNC Greensboro each placed two student-athletes on the squad while High Point, North Carolina Central, Campbell and UNC Wilmington were each represented with one student-athlete.
The squad consists of students from NCAA Division I colleges and universities throughout the state. North Carolina sports information professionals submitted nominees and NCCSIA members selected the teams. The all-state team consists of one setter, three outside hitters, two middle hitters/blockers, one right-side/opposite hitter and one libero/defensive specialist.
Nortz, a junior from Parma, OH is a two-time all-state selection and helped led the Spartans to their second consecutive appearance in the Southern Conference tournament finals. The middle blocker averaged 3.39 kills per game and a team-high 1.24 blocks per game. She earned second team All-SoCon honors and is third on UNCG all-time blocks list with 386 career blocks.
Fuller, a sophomore outside hitter from Murrieta, CA was one of UNCG’s top offensive threats this season. The outside hitter set UNCG all-time kills record this season with 543 kills and averaged 4.05 kills for the Spartans throughout the season. For her efforts the sophomore was named to the Southern Conference All-Tournament team.
UNCG concluded the season with a 20-15 record and an 11-7 SoCon record, its best record since joining the league in 1997. The Spartans earned a trip to the Southern Conference finals after defeating the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, its second consecutive trip to the finals.
Founded in 2002, NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The organization seeks to promote collegiate athletics and student-athletes at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information. NCSSIA selects all-state teams for men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball on the College (Division II, III, NAIA) and University (Division I) levels. More than 400 student-athletes have been recognized on all-state teams since 2003.
