Volleyball signs two student-athletes to NLI’s

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro head volleyball coach Shawn Garus announced Monday the commitments of two high school student-athletes during the National Letter of Intent early signing period.

UNCG received commitments from Luciana Shafer, a 5-9 outside hitter from San Juan Capistrano, CA and Jenna Olbright, a 5-11 setter from Orange, CA.

“I feel very fortunate to be adding such high-level recruits to our volleyball program,” said Garus. They understand the commitment our team has to success and are eager to become part of the team. They both have excellent character and will fit in well with our program.”

Shafer will become the third recruit to join the program from San Juan Capistrano, CA following Theresa and Katherine Hart. Schafer plays club volleyball for the Golden West Volleyball Club and was an All-Tournament performer at the 2007 Junior Olympics, 17 National Division. She is an All-Trinity league first team performer at JSerra High School and is planning to major in business at UNCG.

“Luciana is a really great athlete that plays much bigger than she is. She has had excellent high school and club coaches which will help her compete for playing time as a freshman.

Olbright, a native of Orange, CA, plays her club volleyball with the Locals Only Volleyball Club. The 5-11 setter has competed with the SCVA High Performance team at an international tournament in Italy and also earned All-Tournament honors at the 2005 Invitational, 15 Club Division. She has been a First Team All-League performer at El Modena High School and was named Century League MVP her senior year. She plans to major in psychology at UNCG.

“Jenna has all the tools to be a great setter and with her capabilities she will add some exciting options to our offense. She has been fortunate to learn a great deal of the game from her parents, both of whom were collegiate setters.

Shafer and Olbright will join the Spartans for the 2008-09 academic year.
