Kaitlyn Nortz named Southern Conference Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro junior volleyball player Kaitlyn Nortz was named Southern Conference volleyball Player of the Week for her performances in UNCG’s two victories last weekend.

Nortz, a junior middle blocker from Parma, OH, has been awarded the award for her efforts in UNCG’s 3-0 sweep of fourth place Chattanooga and a 3-1 win over Western Carolina in the Spartan’s regular-season finale. This is the first career honor for Nortz and is third SoCon honor for the Spartans this season. Emily Lindborg earned the honor the week of Sept. 17 and Branagan Fuller was named Player of the Month for the month of September.

In UNCG’s 3-0 win over Chattanooga, Nortz tallied a team-high 14 kills on 28 attempts with only four errors, good for a .357 hitting percentage. Nortz also tallied a team-high nine blocks, which is just one block shy of her career high of 10 set during the 2005 season. She was equally impressive during the Spartans 3-1 win over Western Carolina. She again led the offense with 18 kills on 32 attempts with three errors for a team-leading .457 hitting percentage, marking her third best hitting percentage of the season.

Nortz leads the Spartans with 144 blocks and is second on the team in hitting percentage (.308) and kills per game (3.47). She ranks third on UNCG’s career blocks list with 365 and is tied for fourth all-time on UNCG’s career kills list with 1,127

UNCG, who is coming off of its best SoCon season with an 11-7 record, is the sixth seed at this weekends 2007 Southern Conference Tournament, hosted by Chattanooga. The Spartans will face third-seeded Furman in opening round action on Friday at 12:30 pm.
