UNCG womens volleyball team falls in four games at Georgia Southern
STATESBORO, GA – The UNC Greensboro women’s volleyball team won the first game of its match with Georgia Southern, but was unable to hold off the Eagles in a 3-1 setback Saturday morning at Hanner Fieldhouse. GSU won the match 28-30, 30-18, 30-27 and 30-22.
Georgia Southern (15-8, 8-3 SoCon) and UNCG (2-19, 1-10 SoCon) battled back and forth throughout the first game with the lead never increasing by more than four points for either team. The Spartans would out hit the Eagles .317 to .163 in game one, which proved to be the difference in a 30-28 victory for UNCG.
In the second game, the two teams played to a 9-9 tie, before Georgia Southern went on a 16-4 run to extend the Eagles lead to 25-13. The Eagles would hit a match high .500 in the second game and won 30-18.
After the intermission, UNCG opened game three with an 11-5 lead, but the Eagles bounced back with six straight points to even the score at 11-11. The home team eventually took game three 30-27. In the fourth and final game, Georgia Southern never looked back from a 10-4 lead and won the game 30-22.
UNCG was led by junior Hilary Overby’s “double-double” with a season-high 20 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Kaitlyn Nortz and senior Lauren Richards added 13 and 12 kills respectively. Senior Adrian Hicks dished out 49 assists. Christin Heverly and Alysia Rosvold came up with 12 and 11 digs respectively.
Georgia Southern was led by three double-doubles in the match, including 20 kills, 13 digs and three blocks by sophomore Bailey Coleman. Senior Iulia Porumbescu led the match in kills and digs, recording 24 and 20 respectively. Meanwhile, senior Natalia Galantini recorded 32 assists, 16 digs and a season-high five kills. Junior Staci Anderson recorded 19 digs.
UNCG returns home for the first time in over two weeks when the Spartans host city rival North Carolina A & T on Tuesday at Fleming Gym beginning at 7 pm. Georgia Southern will host Elon on Sunday at 1 pm at Hanner Fieldhouse.
