Spartans fall in three games to Georgia Southern in womens volleyball
GREENSBORO, NC – Iulia Porumbescu notched a match-high 24 kills to lead Georgia Southern to a 3-0 win over UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference women’s volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Fleming Gym. The Eagles open league play with a victory and improve to 8-5 overall, while UNCG drops to 1-2 in the SoCon and 2-11 overall.
Hilary Overby led the Spartans in kills for the second straight day with nine, while Lauren Richards and Lauren Keiser put away six and five kills respectively. Adrian Hicks dished out 25 assists, while Ashley Smith came up with a match-high 16 kills.
In game one, UNCG grabbed the early 13-9 on a kill by Alysia Rosvold, but Georgia Southern stormed right back to tie the score 14-14. With the game still tied at 18-18, the Eagles scored three straight points to take a 21-18 advantage and would never look back in a 30-22 victory.
Game two was the complete opposite as the opener as Georgia Southern jump out to an 8-4 lead, before UNCG tied the game up 8-8 on a Richard’s kill. That spring boarded the Spartans to a 12-9 lead, before the Eagles rallied to tie the game at 14-14. With the score knotted 18-18, UNCG ran off six of the next eight points to take a 24-20 lead, but Georgia Southern re-tied the score at 27-27 and would go on to win with a Porumbescu put away to end the game.
Game three was dominated by the visitors. The Eagles scored the first five points of the game, but UNCG rattled off six of the next seven points to square the affair at 6-6 on a Hicks service ace. From that point, Jennifer Schenk put GSU back on top with a kill and they never looked back in a 30-14 win. The Eagles hit an impressive .414 (14-2-29) for the final game.
Porumbescu hit a staggering .439 for the match on 24 kills against six errors on 41 total attempts. Bailey Coleman had eight kills and eight digs of her own.
UNCG returns to the court next Saturday when they visit SoCon rival Appalachian State for a 7 pm match in Boone, NC. Meanwhile, Georgia Southern will take on Elon tomorrow at 1 pm in Elon, NC.
