SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG redshirt senior Ashley Schnell has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for April 25 through May 1, the league office announced Wednesday.
Schnell turned in an Olympic-level qualifying performance, the first in the history of UNCG's women's track and field program, at Stanford's prestigious Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sunday. Running the 10,000 meters for the first time in her career, the Lincoln, Neb., native finished 10th in her heat in 33:59.84, good for a B standard qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Schnell's time, which came in a field loaded with elite collegiate athletes and several professionals, shaved nearly two and a half minutes off the previous school record, which had stood since 1999.
Schnell, who has a 4.00 grade point average and is majoring in musical performance, was named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week for the third time this academic year. She also took the honor twice during cross country season, on Sept. 21 and Nov. 3. UNCG has taken the award four times total during the 2011-12 campaign, as women's tennis player Alex Whitehead was the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on March 21.
Schnell was a third-team Capital One Academic All-American last season.
