PALO ALTO, Calif. – UNCG wrapped up competition at the esteemed Payton Jordan Invitational late Sunday evening with two Olympic-level qualifying performances, the first of UNCG's history. Sophomore Paul Chelimo posted an eighth-place finish amidst a loaded field in the fast heat of the 5,000 meters en route to hitting the Olympic B standard for the event.
The first collegian finisher in the field, Chelimo lowered the school record he set three weeks ago on the same track at the Stanford Invitational by exactly 11 seconds, crossing the line in 13:21.89. Chelimo was less than two seconds off the Olympic A qualifier of 13:20.
In her 10,000 meter debut, Ashley Schnell, the lone woman representing the Spartans in the Golden State, finished in 10th place with a time of 33:59.84. Breaking the 34-minute barrier gives Schnell the B standard qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., June 21-July 1.
UNCG 800-meter specialist Taylor Hurst will compete at the Duke Twilight meet May 6, while other Spartan runners will compete May 12 at the Virginia Challenge, a last-chance meet hosted by University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
