PHILADELPHIA – UNCG's men's and women's track and field teams fared well at the 118th Penn Relays late Thursday night with several personal-best performances. Shaina Sumney led a trio of Spartan women in the 5,000 meters with a fifth-place performance.
Sumney recorded a time of 16:48.62, which replaced the personal record she set earlier in the season at Raleigh Relays. Kerry Hartman also set a personal best in the same event with an 11th-place finish in a time of 16:53.87. Chelsea Sumney finished 15th in 16:58.31.
Joey Thompson also had a stellar day for UNCG men, crushing his own personal best in the 5,000m. Thompson ran a time of 14:22.76, which was good for 18th place overall.
Abraham Kemboi was not far off his personal best in the 10,000 meters. Kemboi crossed the line in 31:25.40, less than half a minute off the personal record he set at the Duke Invite earlier in the season.
The Penn Relays, the largest track meet in the world, drew more than 100,000 spectators last year for the 12th consecutive year. The field includes some of the best high school, collegiate and professional runners from all over the globe.
Paul Chelimo and Ashley Schnell will be competing for UNCG on Sunday at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
