UNCG men, women win DMR titles at SoCon Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Both the UNCG men and women distance medley relay teams captured the SoCon title to lead the Spartans on the first day of the 2012 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday.

The women's relay squad of Kerry Hartman, Chelsea Sumney, Shaina Sumney and Ashley Schnell won their race by 19 seconds after running an 11:43.99. That time set also broke the conference record by nine seconds that Samford set in 2009.

Paul Chelimo, Taylor Hurst, Paul Katam and Joey Thompson formed the men's distance medley relay team that won their race by a second in a time of 9:59.73. That time set a new school record by over 11 seconds.

Hurst also had a good day in the 800 meter prelims as he came in seventh place in a time of 1:57.22. That time qualified him for the 800 meter finals on Friday.

Shannon Hall nearly qualified for the women's 800 meter finals, but her time of 2:17.21 was .09 short of qualifying.

Abraham Kemboi completed the 3,000 meter race in ninth place after running an 8:35.01. That earned him Southern Conference All-Freshman Team accolades for that event. Thompson also run in that event and finished in fifth in a time of 8:19.83.

In the women's 3,000 meters, Shaina Sumney nearly earned All-SoCon honors after coming in fourth place in a time of 9:53.27.

The final day of the championships will resume at 9:15 a.m. on Friday.
