Schnell sets another school record at Tiger Paw Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. – Ashley Schnell broke her third school record in as many weeks and the distance medley relay team also broke a school record to lead UNCG on the final day of the Tiger Paw Invitational inside the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.
Schnell, who set the school record in the mile two weeks ago at the Liberty Open and set the 3,000 meter school record at the Meyo Invitational last weekend, came out and set a new school-best time in the 800 meters. Her time of 2:19.07 was good enough for fourth place and was 2.68 seconds faster than Jess Weber's old school record set in 2008.
The distance medley relay team, consisting of Shaina Sumney, Shannon Hall, Kerry Hartman and Kelly Montague, combined to set a new school record in the event. Their combined time of 12:28.89 bested the previous school record by nearly 12 seconds.
Chelsea Sumney also had a nice afternoon as she came in 11th place in the 3,000 meters in a time of 10:22.63. She moved into fourth place all-time in the event at UNCG, bumping her sister, Shaina, to fifth place. Ginny Cronley ran a 10:40.12 in the 3,000 meter, as well, in her first-ever attempt of that distance.
On the men's side, Paul Katam finished in fifth place in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:44.86. Kenny Hinman wasn't too far behind him in 15th place after running a 9:00.26.
The men's distance medley relay team, comprised of Andy Clyne, Ben Constantinides, John Teeter and Parker Wenos, finished in fourth place in a time of 10:36.68.
The Spartans will now have two weeks off before the Southern Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 26-27, in Clemson, S.C.
