16 Spartan student-athletes named to Academic All-Conference

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference honored 159 student-athletes this week as it announced the Academic All-Conference teams for the 2009-10 winter season - a list that included 16 Spartan student-athletes.

The 159 student-athletes, which represented all 12 conference institutions and participated in men's and women's basketball, wrestling and men's and women's indoor track and field recorded a 3.56 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

UNC Greensboro track athlete Joey Thompson and Georgia Southern women's basketball player Samantha Williams boasted perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the winter season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters (fall and spring).

The league's indoor track and field teams supplied the most student-athletes to the team, including 71 women and 33 men. Women's basketball (32 players) was also well represented. Western Carolina led all schools with 25 honorees followed by Appalachian State (18) UNCG and Elon (16).
