DURHAM, NC – AJ Savoia nearly broke the school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to help lead UNC Greensboro at the Duke Invitational on Saturday.
Savoia’s time of 9:25.52 was good enough for the second-best time in school history and fewer than two seconds from breaking the school record.
Freshman Joey Thompson was also a bright spot for the Spartans as his time of 15:03.65 in the 5,000 meters was also the second-best time in school history.
TJ Wyatt also was a top performer as he recorded the fourth-best time in school history in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.72.
On the women’s side, Danielle Merriman and Michelle Chewens were the top performers. Merriman ran the 400 meters in just 1:07.25, which was good enough for the fourth-best time in school history.
Chewens’ time of 2:21.63 in the 800 meters was also the fourth-best time in school history.
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday at the Carolina Fast Times in Chapel Hill, NC on April 11.
