WINSTON-SALEM, NC – AJ Savoia finished seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase as UNC Greensboro opened the 2009 outdoor track & field season at the Wake Forest Open on Friday.
Savoia led a strong Spartan effort in the steeplechase as UNCG had three finish in the top-15. Savoia’s time of 9:47.55 was the fourth fastest in that event in school history.
Taylor Hurst was also a top performer for the Spartans on Friday. His time of 1:55.21 in the 800 meters was also the fourth fastest time in school history and it broke his personal best by .42 seconds.
Kerry Hartman led the women with her 24th place finish in the 800 meters. She ran a time of 2:20.56, which was the third fastest time in school history.
The Spartans will return to Wake Forest on Saturday for the second day of competition.
