UNCG men in third place after Day One action at SoCon Championships

CULLOWHEE, NC – The UNC Greensboro men’s track and field team sits in third place after one day of competition at the 2008 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships after earning four Top Five finishes.

The Spartans were well-represented in the men’s 800 meter run as all three participants set new personal records and advanced to Sunday’s finals. Freshman Taylor Hurst finished second in his heat with a time of 1:55.63 while Andy Clyne and Terry Wyatt finished 1, 2 in their heat with times of 1:54.18 and 1:54.31, respectively.

Freshman AJ Savoia continued to shine in the 3000 meter steeplechase finishing in second place with a time of 9:28.50 behind Appalachian State’s Mark Maddox who took first place with w time of 9:24.37. UNCG’s Ryan Rodd took home fourth place with a time of 9:36.79.

Ramon Jobson Brown took second place in the men’s long jump with a jump of 6.54 meters which bested his previous personal record of 6.49 meters set last season.

Josh Wyatt rounded out the UNCG contingent with a fifth-place finish in the men’s 10,000 meter run. The Hope Mills, NC native crossed the finish line in 32:40.96 just behind a contingent of Appalachian State men led by Blair Teal who took top honors with a time of 32:13.86.

UNCG earned 17 points through six scored events and is trailing Appalachian State and Western Carolina. The Mountaineers are holding the top spot with 146 points while Western Carolina sits in second with 47. Davidson has nine points while The Citadel and Furman each have five points to round out the top five. Chattanooga is sitting in seventh place with four points.

The Spartans will conclude action at the 2008 SoCon Championships tomorrow. Action gets underway at 9:30 am with the decathlon and heptathlon.
