Rutz breaks school record, Vaccaro narrowly misses one on Day 1 at Duke

DURHAM, NC – Nicolas Vaccaro narrowly missed his own record in the 1,500 meters and Xavier Rutz broke his own in the 5,000 meters to highlight UNC Greensboro’s first day of performances at the 2007 Duke Asics Invitiational at Wallace Wade Stadium on Friday.

Vaccaro, a senior from Hillsborough, NJ, crossed the line in 3:57.78 to finish in 28th place, missing his school record by just over one-half second. He set that record earlier this season.

Rutz, Keith Gruchacz and Josh Wyatt recorded personal bests in the 5,000 meters, as did Lincoln Bennett in the developmental 1,500 meters. Rutz, a junior from Cary, NC, broke his own school record with a mark of 14:52.88, trimming nearly five seconds off the record he set at Duke last May.

Action at the meet resumes Saturday morning.
