GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis program takes a short trip to Winston-Salem to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Saturday, Feb. 16.
The 1-2 Spartans are coming off of a 6-1 victory over Campbell last Saturday, Feb. 9.
UNCG dominated in doubles play, winning all three matches, before winning five out of six singles matches.
Senior Niltooli Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn. / Homeschooled) won her match against Campbell's Tamara Stanic 6-1, 6-3, while junior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey / Gunes Koleji) lost in a tough match against Ana Ortiz, 4-6, 2-6.
Senior Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) won in a second-set tiebreaker against Ewa Telenga, 6-0, 3-6 (10-3). Classmate Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) dualed Lourdes Ros to win 7-6 (7-3), 6-0.
Sophomore Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga. / Walton) also picked up a win against Kirsten Renz, while sophomore Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Broward Virtual School) beat Lauren Vaughn, 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman Alisha Burton (Charlotte, N.C. / Zebulon B. Vance) won in an exhibition match against Caroline Lindsey, 8-3.
Wake Forest has won five straight matches and holds a 5-2 record. The Demon Deacons last faced VCU falling short, 4-3. Senior Kathryn Talbert claimed Wake's first win over a ranked individual this spring against No. 46 Salome Kvitashvili of VCU 7-6 (7-4), 5-2 on Saturday. Freshman Kasey Gardiner is on a singles winning streak with a 4-0 record so far this spring.
This is the first time the schools will be meeting since 2005 and just the fifth since 1981. Wake Forest has won the previous five meetings between the two.
Play at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex will begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
