GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's women's tennis program is back in action as they go head to head against No. 8 North Carolina Wednesday, Jan. 23, in Chapel Hill, N.C. to open the 2013 spring season.
"We are always excited for the first match of the spring," said head coach Jeff Trivette. "We started preparing for this in August. Playing against UNC, a top ten program, is a great test to see what we are capable of this season."
This is the first match for the Spartans since concluding the 2012 fall season on Nov. 9 at the Kitty Harrison Invitational. The Spartans finished 66-52 in singles and 26-20 in doubles.
In the fall, senior Niltooli Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn. / Homeschooled) went 11-4 in singles and 11-3 with classmate Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) in doubles.
UNCG finished the 2012 spring season 18-6, while holding a 10-0 record in Southern Conference play.
Last spring, Wilkins went 30-6 in singles play and teamed up with former Spartan, Lucy Dougherty to earn a 23-11 doubles record.
Sophomore Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Broward Virtual School) and senior Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) ended the season with a 19-6 record in doubles, while Whitehead and former teammate Devon Sutherland ended with a solid 15-2.
North Carolina is ranked No. 8 in the ITA rankings and has seven players ranked in the top 125. Senior Gina Suarez-Malaguti has the highest ranking at No. 11, followed by freshman Whitney Kay (No. 21). Also in the rankings, senior Zoe De Bruycker at No. 28, sophomore Caroline Price (No. 36), freshman Ashley Dai (No. 65), junior Tessa Lyons (No. 101), and senior Lauren McHale (No. 111).
Play at UNC will begin Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m.
