Women's Tennis Completes First Day at Kitty Harrison Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga. / Walton) earned a Spartan victory with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 singles win against Maryland's Sarah Gealer Friday at the Kitty Harrison Invitational, hosted by UNC.
"We started slow this morning, but we rebounded this afternoon," said head coach Jeff Trivette. "It took us a while to get back into a competitive mindset after a three week layoff from tournament play."
Freshman Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain / Tile Hill Wood School) fought to win 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 against Pauline Gilbert from Minnesota, while sophomore Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Broward Virtual School) beat Minnesota's Emilie Renault, 6-2, 7-5.
Senior Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) lost 7-6 (6-3), 6-3 in a tough match to Hope Johnson from William and Mary.
In doubles play, senior Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) and Gammie beat Virginia Tech's Tea Ivanovic and Carol Kahoun, 8-5.
Whitehead and senior Niltooli Wilkins (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) dropped a close match against Mary Clayton and Annie Mulholland from Duke, 8-6.
Junior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey / Gunes Koleji) and freshman Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) fell 9-7 to Isel Martinez-Marcos and Ilinca Stoica from Viginia Tech.
Play at the Kitty Harrison Invitational will continue Saturday, Nov. 10, in Chapel Hill, beginning at 9 a.m.
