Women's Tennis Concludes Charlotte 49ers Invite
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Seniors Niltooli Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn. / Homeschooled) and Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) lead the Spartans placing No. 1 in doubles for the Charlotte 49ers Invite Saturday. The duo won 8-2 against ECU's Danielle Terpko and Yilian Zhang in match four on the final day of the tournament.
Sophomore Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Broward Virtual School) and freshman Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain / Tile Hill Wood School) fell to Abby Richmond and Neena Wanko from ECU, while sophomore Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga. / Walton) and freshman Alisha Burton (Charlotte, N.C. / Zebulon B. Vance) picked up a 9-7 win against ECU's Vanessa Fuleihan and Karling Watson.
Senior Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) and junior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey / Gunes Koleji) placed second in doubles at the tournament.
In singles play, UNCG played Coastal Carolina in match 5.
Whitehead earned the No. 1 spot of the tournament in singles after winning 7-5, 6-2 against Libby Scott. Rios beat Shelby Bates 6-3, 6-4. Falcon, who placed fourth in singles overall in the tournament, also picked up an easy 6-0, 6-0 win against Mikaela Davies.
Anane took down Vanessa Ortiz, 6-3, 6-0, while freshman Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) won in a three set battle against Dana Gray, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8. Grinberg was the No. 6 winner of the tournament.
The Blue and Gold dominated against Charlotte in match six.
Falcon won 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 against Natsuko Takayanagi, while Anane beat Iveta Guneva, 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain / Newcastle Under Lyme School) dueled Jessica Perez and won, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, while Burton fought to win 4-6, 7-6, 10-3 against Ginny Johnson.
The Spartans return to action at the ITA Carolina Regional, in Winston-Salem, Oct. 18-22.
