Women's Tennis Has Solid Day One in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis program ends day one of the Charlotte 49ers Invite undefeated in doubles play Friday, Oct. 12.
The Spartans took down Charlotte in match one of the tournament.
Seniors Niltooli Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn. / Homeschooled) and Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) won 8-6 against Lisa Grosselius and Anna Eukland.
Classmate Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) teamed up with junior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey / Gunes Koleji) to beat Alex Zinn and Natsuko Takayangi, 8-2.
Sophomore Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Broward Virtual School) and freshman Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain / Tile Hill Wood School) picked up an 8-2 win against Jessica Perez and Ginny Johnson.
Freshman Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) played in the only singles match in match one and was winning against Emmanuelle Briant, 6-1, 5-0, before Briant withdrew due to an injury.
UNCG also defeated Coastal Carolina in doubles in match two.
Team Wilkins/Whitehead beat Libby Scott and Kourtney Kowal, 8-4, before Rios and Yurtkuran shut out Shelby Bates and Mikaela Davies, 8-0. Gammie and Anane won 8-2 against Vanessa Ortiz and Dana Gray.
The Blue and Gold completed day one with singles play against ECU in match three.
Whitehead picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win against Yiliam Zhang, while Yurtkuran fought in a three set match, but fell to Melis Tanik, 6-4, 5-7, 13-11.
Rios dueled Nicole Laduca, but lost 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 10-6. Sophomore Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga. / Walton) beat Abby Richmond 6-4, 6-0.
Anane lost in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to Danielle Terpko, before Grinberg picked up a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Neena Wanko.
Freshman Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain / Newcastle Under Lyme School) won in an easy two set match against Karling Watson, 6-2, 6-0. Classmate Alisha Burton (Charlotte, N.C. / Zebulon B. Vance) lost 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 to Vanessa Fuleihan.
Play at the Charlotte 49ers Invite concludes Saturday, Oct. 13.
