CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – The UNCG women's tennis team started off strong at the UVA Invitational and Elon Invitational Friday on Day One.
"We had a great day," said head women's tennis coach Jeff Trivette. "We won six out of eight singles matches, beating UVA, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Marshall and William & Mary. We have a terrific opportunity this weekend. We have put ourselves in a position to go far in this event.
Niltooli Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn. / Homeschooled) and Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) captured the first Spartan victory of the tournament with a 9-8 doubles win over Wake Forest's Rebecca Siegler and Andrea Retolaza Andrade. Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) and Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey / Gunes Koleji) fell short against USC's Jaklin Alawi and Alex Martin losing 8-1.
Returning senior, Wilkins won her first match over Karen Forman from Wake Forest 6-3, 6-2. She followed her first singles win of the tournament going 6-3 in the first set, dropping the second set 3-6, and then rebounding with a convincing 6-1 win over Maci Epstein from UVA.
Rios dueled Kara Kucin from Marshall and fought for a 7-5, 6-2 win before winning 6-3, 6-4 against Rebecca Siegler from Wake Forest.
Yurtkuran competed in a three-set tiebreaker claiming a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Martin (USC). She went 6-3 and 3-6 in her next match, breaking the tie with a 6-4 win against Sydney Smith from William & Mary.
Whitehead fell short losing 7-5, 6-0 against Hana Tomljanovic from UVA.
Freshman Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) claimed her first collegiate victory with a straight sets win against Nicole Nielly from SoCon member Western Carolina, 6-2, 6-2.
Redshirt freshman Alisha Burton (Charlotte, N.C./Zebulon B. Vance) fought back to win a third set tiebreaker against Caroline Lindsey (Campbell), 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Burton won the second set 6-4 and won the third set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-2).
Sophomore Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) lost in straight sets to Bryn Khoury from Elon, 7-6 (7-0), 6-2. Gammie forced a first set tiebreaker but lost 7-0 and dropped the second set 6-2.
Classmate Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) lost a tough three set match against Ana Ortiz (Campbell), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Falcon won the second set 6-3 but fell in the third 6-4. Freshman Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Brittian/Newcastle Under Lyme School) also lost in three sets to Rebecca Wood from North Carolina Central, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
In doubles, Falcon and Gammie blanked Cross and Henry (NC Central), 8-0, in the Doubles A Flight.
Play at the UVA Fall Invitational resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. and the Elon Invitational will resume Saturday at 11 a.m.
