SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG junior Annette Rios has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for matches March 26 through April 1, the league office announced Tuesday. Rios went 6-0 on the week as the Spartans ran their winning streak to seven matches to move to the top of the league standings.
Rios was 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles as UNCG (12-4, 7-0 SoCon) topped Appalachian State, Wofford and Furman.
Against Appalachian State on Wednesday, Rios teamed with freshman Kayla Gammie for an 8-2 win over Kim-Lea Dinh and Blakely Bean at No. 3 doubles. In singles play, Rios earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Gabriela Celi at No. 3.
The Santa Ana, El Salvador, native won in a super tiebreaker Saturday against Wofford, beating Audrey Coventry 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 3 singles. In doubles play, she and Gammie rolled to an easy 8-1 win over Emily Przystawski and Lucy Schermerhorn at No. 3.
Rios wrapped up her week with a big day against Furman, which came into the match tied atop the league standings with UNCG. With the Spartans nursing a 3-2 lead and No. 1 player Niltooli Wilkins in the early stages of her third set, Rios again overcame a first-set loss to close out a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Margaret Boyette at No. 4 singles to clinch the match, giving the Spartans the win in the first-place showdown and sole possession for first place in the league.
She and Gammie also clinched the doubles point for UNCG, wrapping up an 8-4 win that proved crucial when the Spartans' top doubles duo lost for just the fourth time this spring.
With three wins on the week, Rios and Gammie ran their winning streak to 10 matches. The duo is 14-3 together this season with a 12-1 dual mark and a 7-0 SoCon record.
In singles action, Rios has won five straight. She is 15-11 on the year with an 11-5 dual mark. She is 6-1 in league play.
The award is the first of Rios' career and marks the second consecutive week that UNCG has taken the honor. Wilkins was the league's player of the week on March 27.
The first-place Spartans step out of conference for a match at Charlotte (13-3) on Wednesday before returning to SoCon play Saturday to host fellow undefeated College of Charleston (17-4, 6-0 SoCon) in a crucial contest at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
