UNCG moves to 2-0 in league play with 5-2 win at Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UNCG moved to 2-0 in Southern Conference play with a 5-2 win over Chattanooga on Sunday at the Champions Club.
UNCG (7-4, 2-0 SoCon) picked up the doubles point and wins at Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 6 singles in cruising to the win.
Annette Rios and Kayla Gammie got the Spartans going with an 8-5 win over Emily Hangstefer and Brianna Wishing at No. 3 doubles. Alex Whitehead and Devon Sutherland clinched the point with an 8-4 win over Jenna Nurik and Shaina Singh at No. 2.
Chattanooga (9-3, 1-2 SoCon) avoided the doubles sweep at No. 1, where Kaylen Chadwell and Alexa Flynn knocked off UNCG's 66th-ranked tandem of Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins, 8-6.
In singles play, Flynn evened the score with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Dilara Yurtkuran at No. 2. Whitehead countered with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Chadwell at No. 3 to put the Spartans back on top, and Dougherty turned in a 7-5, 6-0 win over Singh at No. 5 to make it 3-1.
Hangstefer kept the Lady Mocs alive with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over Rios at No. 4, but Wilkins clinched the match with her 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Nurik at No. 1. The victory was Wilkins' 20th of the season in singles play.
Stephanie Falcon wrapped things up with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win over Claire Mulyadi at No. 6.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday at Davidson for a 3:30 p.m. match.
