Wilkins named SoCon Women's Tennis Player of the Month
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG women's tennis player Niltooli Wilkins was named the Southern Conference Player of the Month for February, the league office announced Tuesday.
Wilkins, a redshirt junior from Burnsville, Minn., was 8-0 in February, going 4-0 in both doubles and singles, all at No. 1. She didn't drop a set in singles play on the month, surrendering just 15 games in eight sets total. She beat Zoe Hamel of UNC Asheville, Yilian Zhang of East Carolina, Erica White of Gardner-Webb and Joanna Matuszczyk of Richmond, with none of them winning more than three games in a set.
Wilkins and Alex Whitehead clinched the doubles point against UNC Asheville on Feb. 4, while she and Lucy Dougherty clinched the point against Gardner-Webb on Feb. 21. Wilkins and Whitehead also picked up wins over the No. 1 duos from ECU and Richmond.
The player of the month award is the third of Wilkins' career. She also took the honor in February and March of last year.
As a team, the Spartans were 3-1 in February. UNCG, which is 5-4 overall, opens Southern Conference play at Samford on Saturday.
