Three advance at USTA/ITA Carolinas Regional Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNCG women's tennis players Niltooli Wilkins, Lucy Dougherty and Alex Whitehead are still alive at the USTA/ITA Carolinas Regional Championships after Friday wins at North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

In doubles play, fifth-seeded Wilkins and Dougherty cruised to an 8-3 win over Southern Conference foes Nisha Crouser and Stephani Synn of Davidson in the round of 32.

Whitehead and Annette Rios saw their doubles run come to an end in the same round, falling to UNC Wilmington's Olga Blank and Kelly Cameron, 8-5.

In singles play, Whitehead picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Presbyterian's Paige Oelke to advance to the round of 32, while Wilkins, the ninth seed, took a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Wake Forest's Brigita Bercyte.

UNCG resumes play at the tournament Saturday with Wilkins and Dougherty taking on North Carolina's Laura Slater and Jennifer Stone at 8:30 a.m. Coincidentally, Wilkins will face Slater in singles play at noon, while Whitehead will take on Clemson's Keri Wong, the third seed, at 12:30 p.m.
