Yurtkuran, Rios win consolation doubles flight at Wake Forest Invite
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – UNCG's Annette Rios and Dilara Yurtkuran won the consolation bracket of the B Doubles flight at the Wake Forest Invitational, while Stephanie Falcon and Devon Sutherland fell in the championship final of the C Doubles flight on Sunday.
Rios and Yurtkuran gutted out a 9-8 (8-4) win over UNC Wilmington's Christina Lee and Alyssa Ritchie to bring home the B Doubles consolation title. Falcon and Sutherland, the top seeds in C Doubles, dropped an 8-0 decision to Marshall's Karlyn Timko and Ellie Ball, seeded second, in their title match.
Also in doubles action, UNCW's Olga Blank and Kelly Cameron topped UNCG's Alex Whitehead and Kayla Gammie, 8-4.
In singles play, Falcon stopped Wake Forest's Karen Forman in the D Singles flight, 6-4, 6-4. Sutherland dropped Virginia's Clare Spooner in E Singles, 6-2, 6-2, while Whitehead won in a walkover in A Singles.
VCU's Ana Bara downed Yurtkuran in B Singles, 6-2, 6-2; East Tennessee State's Karina Kedzo dropped Rios in C Singles 2-6, 6-2, 6-0; and Elon's Katy Canada defeated Gammie in F Singles 6-2, 6-3.
UNCG returns to action at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C., from Oct. 20-24.
