WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – UNCG's women's tennis team had an impressive showing on the first day of the Wake Forest Invitational, going 5-1 in singles play and 3-2 in doubles action at the Wake Forest Tennis Center on Friday.

The Spartans were victorious in the B-F singles flights. Dilara Yurtkuran picked up a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-4 win over Richmond's Melissa Kandinata in B Singles, while Annette Rios topped Virginia Tech's Courtney Rauscher 6-4, 6-1 in C Singles. Stephanie Falcon downed Richmond's Elizabeth Sims, the fourth seed in the D Singles flight, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Devon Sutherland, the third seed in the E Singles flight, topped a Southern Conference opponent in Davidson's Catherine Wood, 6-3, 6-1. Kayla Gammie dropped Campbell's Lourdes Ros 6-3, 6-4 in F Singles.

UNCG's lone singles loss came in the A Singles flight, where Missouri's Maria Christensen knocked off Alex Whitehead, 6-0, 6-3.

Whitehead got a measure of revenge in doubles play, teaming with Gammie to down Christensen and Ashleigh Chiaf in the first round of the A Doubles flight, 8-2. Louisville's Sarah Miller and Mandy Brown, seeded third in the flight, sent Whitehead and Gammie into the fifth-place bracket with an 8-5 win in the second round.

Yurtkuran and Rios dropped an 8-3 match to Winthrop's third-seeded Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli in the B Doubles flight but advanced in the consolation bracket with an 8-3 win over Missouri's Alex Clark and Rachel Stuhlmann.

Sutherland and Falcon, the top seeds in the C Doubles flight, topped Radford's Taylor Newman Sara Tegner 8-5 in the second round of that flight after earning a first-round bye.

The Spartans will return to action at the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday morning, while Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty will compete at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in California later in the day.
