UNCG falls to Furman in SoCon semifinals
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UNCG claimed the doubles point to start the match, but Furman took the first four singles matches and defeated the Spartans, 4-1, in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Championship at the Champions Club on Friday.
The Spartans ended the season with a 15-7 overall record, while the Paladins improved to 13-10 this year.
The match started with a doubles battle that lasted nearly an hour and a half. Furman won the first doubles match at No. 3 as Monica Arguello and Jennifer Betts came away with an 8-2 win. Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins then tied things up with their 8-3 win at No. 2.
It all came down to No. 1 doubles where Stephanie Macfarlane and Alex Whitehead earned a hard-fought 8-6 win over Margaret Boyette and Katherine Oudin to give UNCG the doubles point.
It was all Furman in singles though, as they won the first set in all six matches. Lauren Kline tied the team score at one as she scored a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
Arguello, who is ranked 67th nationally in singles, handed Wilkins just her third loss of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1. Boyette followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4 to give the Paladins a 3-1 advantage.
Amanda Murray closed out the win for Furman with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 for the 4-1 victory.
