UNCG places four on All-SoCon First Team
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Alex Whitehead, Stephanie Macfarlane, Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty all found themselves on the Southern Conference First Team for doubles and Wilkins performed the same feat in singles the conference office announced on Tuesday. Postseason balloting was conducted by the league's head coaches who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Wilkins, a transfer from Minnesota, led the Spartans this season at the No. 1 singles position as she went 17-2 to earn first-team All-SoCon honors. She went 9-1 in the SoCon this season in singles with her only loss coming to No. 72 Monica Arguello, who won SoCon Player of the Year honors. Her only other loss this season in singles came against No. 14 Zoe De Bruycker from No. 4 North Carolina.
Wilkins also was impressive this season in doubles with Dougherty at No. 2 to earn first-team All-SoCon honors. The tandem went 16-2 this season in doubles, including a perfect 9-0 record in conference matches this season. Wilkins joined Samford's Taylor Morgan as the only student-athlete on the first team for both singles and doubles.
Whitehead, who earned second-team honors in singles and doubles last season, was named first-team this season with Macfarlane at No. 1 doubles. The duo has won 12 matches in a row and hasn't loss since an 8-5 setback on March 3 to No. 5 Lauren McHale and Shinann Featherston from No. 4 North Carolina.
The Spartans received a first-round bye and the No. 2 seed in this week's Southern Conference Championship and will face the winner of No. 7 Georgia Southern and No. 10 Western Carolina on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
