GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro swept five of the six singles matches in straight sets on its way to a 6-1 win over Appalachian State in Southern Conference women's tennis action Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans snapped out of a two-match funk and got back to .500 on the season at 8-8, 3-4 in SoCon play. UNCG had suffered consecutive tough 4-3 losses in SoCon play, but bounced back Saturday to get a much-needed win hopes of qualifying for the SoCon Tournament at the end of the month. Only the top four teams qualify for the tourney this season.
Annette Rios won her 19th match of the season, raising her record to 19-7 overall. Rios, playing at No. 5 singles, is now 6-1 in league play and has won nine of her last 11 matches. She defeated Carolina Mauch, 6-3 and 6-4.
Valerie Behr, playing at No. 3 singles, had the most impressive win of the day. She handled Olivia Stannard, 6-1 and 6-0. Behr is 11-5 this spring and is now 15-16 overall on the year.
UNCG returns to action Tuesday when it steps out of conference play to face Liberty for a 2 p.m. match.
