Rios wins eighth straight, but UNCG falls to Elon
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Annette Rios earned win No. 23 on the season Tuesday, but it wasn't enough to hold off Elon's rally as the Phoenix defeated UNC Greensboro, 5-2, in women's tennis action.
Rios won at No. 5 singles over Lauren Sessoms, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0, including a 10-8 score in the 10-point third-set tiebreaker. That ran Rios' mark to 23-7 overall on the year, including a 16-4 mark for the freshman this spring.
The Spartans had swept all three doubles matches - two of them handily - to jump out to the early 1-0 lead. But the Phoenix (15-7, 6-4) won five singles matches, four of them in straight sets, to keep slim hopes alive for a SoCon Tournament slot.
UNCG, which dropped to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in SoCon play, closes out the season on Saturday when it hosts Marshall at 11 a.m.
