PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – UNC Greensboro senior Alejandra Guerra split her two matches at the Riviera ITA All-American tournament on Tuesday, falling in the first round to Georgia's Nadja Gilchrest before beating Michigan's Chisako Sugiyama in a consolation bracket match.
Facing Nadja Gilchrest, a freshman for one of the nation's top teams, Guerra fell in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1. The Tampico, Mexico native suffered her second loss in her last 24 matches going back to last February.
However, Guerra didn't have a hangover when she got to the consolation bracket Tuesday evening. Guerra, ranked No. 114 in the ITA's preseason Top 125, knocked off the No. 39-ranked player in Sugiyama, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, for her highest ranked win of her career.
Guerra will continue play in the consolation bracket on Wednesday.
