CHARLESTON, SC – UNC Greensboro junior
Alejandra Guerra was the named the Southern Conference’s
2007-08 Women’s Tennis Player of the Year when the
conference’s annual awards were announced at the tournament
banquet on Thursday evening.
Guerra, who has won 16 straight matches entering UNCG’s
quarterfinal round match-up with Elon on Friday, is the first
Spartan to earn SoCon Player of the Year honors and the first UNCG
women’s tennis player to earn Conference Player of the Year
honors since Jenny Gonzalez did so in the Big South in 1997.
Gonzalez was the Freshman of the Year and the Player of the Year
that season after going 6-0 in the regular season. This year,
Guerra went 9-0 against SoCon competition in the regular
campaign.
Guerra, a junior from Tampico, Mexico set a school mark for wins with 26 between the fall and spring seasons. Overall, she enters the SoCon Tournament with a 26-5 record this year, including a 17-2 mark this spring. She is also 12-4 in doubles competition this spring with partner Arielle VonStrolley.
During Guerra’s 16-match winning streak, she has yet to lose a set and has only been forced to a tie-breaker once – that coming all the way back on February 23 in the streak’s very first set. Her last loss came to Virginia Tech’s Yasmin Hamza in a third-set 10-point tiebreaker back on February 16. Her only other loss of the spring came back on January 18 to Katrina Tsang of North Carolina, who is currently ranked as the No. 29-ranked collegiate singles player in the country. Last month, Guerra earned both Player of the Week and Player of the Month honors from the league office.
Guerra was named to the singles all-conference first team and she and VonStrolley were named to the doubles’ first-team. VonStrolley is a sophomore from Miramar, FL. The duo is 12-4 this spring, including 7-2 in SoCon play. Including fall tournaments, the pair is 19-8 this year.
