Guerra wins eighth straight, but UNCW slips past UNCG, 4-3

GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro’s Alejandra Guerra earned her eighth straight win, but UNC Wilmington squeaked past UNCG, 4-3, in women’s tennis action Monday afternoon.

Kayla Schwenk’s win at No. 2 singles broke a 3-3 tie to give the Seahawks the match. UNCG’s Arielle VonStrolley had won the opening set, 6-1, before Schwenk won the second set by a 6-3 score. VonStrolley was up 4-3 in the third before Schwenk won the last three games to win the match and give UNCW (12-6-1) the victory.

Guerra, a junior from Tampico, Mexico, raised her record to 9-2 on the spring season by sweeping Priscilla Roberts, 6-0 and 6-1. Roberts came into play on Monday with a 12-4 mark on the season, including 9-4 at No. 1 singles.

After earning the doubles point by winning two of the three pro-sets, UNCG also got a win in singles action by Erica Zabkar. The senior from Atlanta, GA rallied after losing the first set, 6-4, to win the last two sets by identical 6-1 scores. But UNCW won the other four singles matches, capped off by Schwenk’s come-from-behind win, to win the match.

UNCG (4-7) visits Appalachian State in a Southern Conference match on Tuesday at 2:30 pm.
